Laser Hemorrhoidectomy Typical Procedure

Laser hemorrhoidectomy has become the best choice for most of the patients who suffer from hemorrhoids or what is called a bleeding piles. With more and more information available about the laser hemorrhoidectomy, most people now prefer to go for a laser hemorrhoidectomy rather than a traditional hemorrhoidectomy.

Laser hemorrhoidectomy is done as an outpatient procedure in the surgeon’s office. The laser hemorrhoidectomy is a procedure where the hemorrhoids is excised using a beam of CO2 laser.  The pre operative preparations are similar to that of the traditional hemorrhoidectomy. The bowel will be well prepared and is evacuated using a saline enema. Then the perineal area is prepared as for any surgery.

The patient is made to lie in the lithotomy position and the surgeon sprays or injects the local anesthetic agent in the perineal region which makes you feel numb during laser hemorrhoidectomy. Then the laser hemorrhoidectomy is proceeded. The operating surgeon and the assisting staff wear a special type of goggles to protect their eye from the laser exposure during the laser hemorrhoidectomy.

A pinpoint and accurate beam of CO2 laser or an Nd- YAG laser is used to burn out the excessive hemorrhoids in the laser hemorrhoidectomy. In the laser hemorrhoidectomy, the laser beams cauterize the nerve endings and the minute blood vessels which are supplying the excessive growth.

Since the blood vessels that are supplying the growth are cauterized by the laser beam in the laser hemorrhoidectomy, the surgeon operates on a bloodless field which makes him very comfortable and proceeds with the procedure effectively. The laser does not emit smoke and so the surgeon operates with a better vision without blurring due to smoke. The post operative pain in the laser hemorrhoidectomy is also very minimal as the nerve endings are cauterized.

You can undergo a laser hemorrhoidectomy and return to your duty within hours after the surgery. You need not take day offs and stay in the hospital. You will not experience the discomforts like difficulty in sitting etc. after you undergo a laser hemorrhoidectomy. The wound healing in laser hemorrhoidectomy is much faster as there are very minimal chances for post operative wound infection in laser hemorrhoidectomy.

Few of the drawbacks regarding laser hemorrhoidectomy is that there may be minimal pain, numbness and a stretching sensation in the perineum following laser hemorrhoidectomy. There are also chances for recurrences in laser hemorrhoidectomy when compared to the traditional hemorrhoidectomy.

The other set backs are the surgeon should be well versed and experienced in conducting the laser hemorrhoidectomy lest he should burn the normal tissues. Also the cost and maintenance of the laser instruments are very costly. This cost will often be a burden on you. But it can be claimed if you have a proper health insurance.
