The use of lasers to perform an operation called laser hemorrhoidectomy is not something out of a science fiction novel. Using lasers to perform medical procedures has become commonplace especially in treating several diseases. During a laser hemorrhoidectomy a medical grade laser is used to cauterize the tissue around the hemorrhoid leaving the affected area with a blood-free clot that leaves a blood free surface.
The advantages of using a laser to remove hemorrhoids instead of a scalpel are numerous. When a laser is applied to the surface of a hemorrhoid it does not bleed as much as if you were to use a typical scalpel. The act of using a laser seals off the blood vessels causing cauterization. Another advantage is that there is no type of physical distraction or obstruction such as smoke. This proves to be advantageous because it allows the doctor to get a clear view when he is performing the laser hemorrhoidectomy.
The most important reason why the laser hemorrhoidectomy is favored is because it is typically a pain-free operation and allows the patient to return to normal activities within the course of a matter hours. Other types of surgeries including banding and scalpel removal put a significant damper on everyday life.
Most insurance companies do cover the laser hemorrhoidectomy procedure because of the relatively inexpensive cost associated with the surgery. Because the procedure is done inside an office setting the patient does not have to go to an operating room and pay for extra medical charges like general anesthesia, additional nurses, and the fee for booking the operating room.
